Whether you run your own business or work from home for a company, working remotely has its upsides and downsides. Before you set up your own home office, there are several things to take into consideration. For some folks, it’s a great and productive environment. For others, there may not be enough structure.
As novel as working from home sounds, it’s certainly not for everyone. Here are some of the things to think about before you begin – especially how you’ll manage your work/life balance.
Pro: There’s No Dress Code
Unless you have frequent video conferences, one of the perks of working from home is not worrying about your wardrobe. This can actually save you some money, too. Instead of investing in a full closet of office-ready attire, you only need a couple of business outfits.
Con: It Requires Discipline
Working in your PJs and not worrying about how you look sounds great in theory. However, some people really need a structured routine in order to live a happy, healthy life. It can help to set goals and give yourself a schedule. Waking up early to hit the gym before work is a good way to maintain a routine. That way you aren’t just rolling out of bed and stumbling into your home office.
Pro: There’s No Commute
Nobody likes sitting in traffic. Not having to drive to an office every day can save you a lot of time and money. You’ll spend less on gas and vehicle maintenance, and you’ll win back some of your free time off the clock.
Con: It’s Going to Get Lonely
Try as you like to anthropomorphize your favorite pet, it’s just not the same as having coworkers.
Pro: You Can Be More Flexible
Working from home means being able to work at your own pace during the times you feel most productive. It also means being able to better manage your schedule without necessarily having to officially take time off.
Con: It’s Harder to Separate Work from Life
One of the biggest challenges people who work from home face is shutting down and “leaving work.” Without set work hours it can be difficult to make transition back from work to life every day.
Pro: It Can Be Less Stressful
If you’re easily agitated by workplace distractions or being micromanaged, the home environment can often be much less stressful.
Con: You Might Lose Some Living Space
Depending on the requirements of your job, you might have to sacrifice some of your living space. If all you require is a small home office, that might not be so bad. However, the amount of work space you need may vary.
