Here are a few key tips on maintaining a solid balance between your job and the rest of your everyday life.
Set Boundaries Around Your Time
The biggest step to keeping a healthy work-life balance is setting boundaries around your time. Stop working at a certain time, and stick to that time as much as you possibly can.
If you find yourself thinking about work even when you’re off, try to engage in something else that you find meaningful rather than dwelling about your job. And set designated times during which you won’t answer calls or read emails about work, or messages from coworkers or your boss.
Decide on the Best Time to Work
If you have any freedom at all as to when you work or what you do when you’re there, it’s a good idea to work on your most challenging projects during your optimal periods of productivity.
For example, if you’re at your best in the morning, eat a good breakfast and then start on your most difficult tasks right away. Answer emails or do your busy work in the afternoon.
Don’t Just Veg Out Once You’re Done With Work
It can be tempting to just chill out with a beer in front of the TV once you’re done with work, and that’s fine to do some of the time. But if you aren’t ever active or engaged in meaningful hobbies or outings when you’re not working, you’re likely to let your mind wander back to your job.
To make sure your life doesn’t revolve around work, make sure you make time for your passions. Take a class at night or on the weekends, check out a new restaurant every few weeks, or work out regularly.
Schedule Quality Time With the People You Love
Make sure that you’re spending quality time building meaningful relationships in your life. Even if you’re tired, ask your spouse, relatives, kids, roommates, or friends about their days as well so you can stay in the loop.
On weekends and outside of work hours, make time to socialize and have planned fun activities with the people you love. These activities and relationships will help remind you that work isn’t everything.
Take Vacations and Breaks
Many of your colleagues might brag about eating lunch at their desk or never taking vacation time, but that can lead to burnout fast.
Take your allotted lunch and break times, and use your vacation days if you have them. This will ensure that your brain and body have time to rest.
